Discussion for 3 February 2019

Jeremiah 1:4-10
4Now the word of the LORD came to me saying,
5"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,
and before you were born I consecrated you;
I appointed you a prophet to the nations."
6Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy." 7But the LORD said to me,
"Do not say, 'I am only a boy';
for you shall go to all to whom I send you,
and you shall speak whatever I command you,

8Do not be afraid of them,
for I am with you to deliver you,
says the LORD."
9Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me,
"Now I have put my words in your mouth.
10See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms,
to pluck up and to pull down,
to destroy and to overthrow,

to build and to plant."

FOR CONSIDERATION

  • What would you think if a candidate being considered for a new pastor's position responded the way Jeremiah did to YHWH?

Discussion for 27 January 2019

Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10
1all the people gathered together into the square before the Water Gate. They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had given to Israel. 2Accordingly, the priest Ezra brought the law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could hear with understanding. This was on the first day of the seventh month. 3He read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law.
5And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6Then Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people answered, "Amen, Amen," lifting up their hands. Then they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
8So they read from the book, from the law of God, with interpretation. They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.
9And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep." For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. 10Then he said to them, "Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions of them to those for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy to our LORD; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
FOR CONSIDERATION
What are some of the actions the Jewish people display during this worship service?

Discussion for 20 January 2019

1 Corinthians 12:1-11
1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says "Let Jesus be cursed!" and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit.
4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.
FOR CONSIDERATION

What does it mean when we refer to someone as "Gifted?"

What "gifts" do we admire in others?

Discussion for 13 January 2019

Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
15As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts 16John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."
concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah,
21Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."
FOR CONSIDERATION
John has been preaching repentance. Did jesus have any reason to repent? Why was he baptized?

Discussion for 6 January 2019

The class will be looking at 1 Samuel 2:18-20, 6

There will be hand outs in the Chapel with questions to discuss. These are only suggestions. As is the the case more often than not only God knows what will be talked about.

Here are the questions:

For Discussion

  • Why did Hannah take Samuel to Shiloh?

  • Would a parent want to take their children to hear this passage?

-What does this passage say about a dedicated relationship with God. How does it impact every other aspect of one’s life?

-Is there any similarity between what Hannah did with Samuel and what parents do with infant baptism?

  • God gives Hannah more children. Does this imply we can strike bargains with God?  Did Hannah expect to have additional children?

- What does it take to grown in stature and in favor with God?
